About Us: The late Gus Vardakastanis was a leader in the independent grocery store space and a cherished member of the Market family. Today his small grocery chain, Gus’s Community Market, operates several groceries around San Francisco. The Vardakastanis first immigrated to the US in 1974, and started Haight-Ashbury Produce in 1981 as a humble neighborhood grocery. The small chain grew to locations in the Outer Sunset, the Mission, and Mission Bay, each market unique and custom fit to meet the needs of its neighborhood. Gus’s critical distribution location on the Market allows the company to seamlessly source produce for their stores from neighboring merchants on the Market.
