SUPPORTING THE BAY AREA’S FOOD SECURITY

Food insecurity remains a severe issue in the Bay Area. 1 in 10 residents living in San Francisco struggle to access sufficient nutritious food. Our Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood is widely recognized as one of the most at-risk communities in the City for being food-insecure.

The SF Market is committed to ensuring that all Bay Area communities have reliable access to fresh, healthy produce. Since 2016, our award-winning Food Recovery Program has increased access to fresh fruits and vegetables for members of our community who experience food insecurity. Thanks to our merchants and our infrastructure, we can supply produce to a network of community nonprofits and service providers who can efficiently connect it to those most in need.

In 2024, The SF Market’s Food Recovery Program achieved the monumental milestone of recovering 9,000,000 pounds of fresh, culturally diverse produce that otherwise would have been diverted to the landfill, translating to approximately 7.5 million meals.

VOLUNTEER

As a nonprofit, we rely on the support of dedicated volunteers to help us across many disciplines, from marketing to real estate development, from finance to operations. If you are looking for an opportunity to share and expand upon your expertise, there are many volunteer roles available where you would make a meaningful impact on The SF Market’s goals.

We are always looking for volunteers for our advisory committees. In this role, you’d be joining a dedicated team to achieve the objectives in our 2023-2026 Strategic Plan. Time commitments vary by committee but usually include monthly meetings and meeting prep, with opportunities to contribute additional time on ad-hoc projects or special work sessions. If you’re interested in learning more, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact us!

DONATIONS AND GRANTS

The SF Market is in an era of growth and renewal. We have been located at our current site since 1963. Much work is needed to continue supplying the Bay Area with healthy, fresh produce and realize our vision that all the region’s communities have access to this food. Buildings need to be upgraded and/or rebuilt. Roadways need to be reimagined. We welcome you to help us realize our goals!
We currently seek mission-aligned philanthropic, government and private financing to support our expanding programs and ongoing property improvements. Please learn more about the impact of your investment, our track record, and funding opportunities.
