ENGAGING IN OUR COMMUNITY

We have a long-standing commitment to the Bayview Hunters Point community, which has been our home for over 60 years. With our large footprint and long tenure here, we are an active community participant, an employer with over 500 onsite jobs across The SF Market, an example of a thriving Bayview business, and an advocate for thoughtful growth and improvement. At the heart of our efforts, we believe being a good neighbor and giving back to our community and its local businesses is essential.
BAYVIEW COMMUNITY PRODUCE DONATIONS
Widely understood as one of the most food insecure regions within the City and County of San Francisco, our Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood remains the top priority within our Food Recovery Program. We also donate healthy produce to community events in our neighborhood through our Community Produce Donation Program. This includes, but is not limited to, events hosted by Economic Development on Third (EDOT), Bayview Sunday Streets, The San Francisco Chapter of The Links, and SF Housing Development Corporation.

MARKET ZONE WORKING GROUP
The Market Zone Working Group, composed of local owners and operators of production, distribution, and repair (PDR) businesses surrounding the Market, plays a key role in advocacy for the neighborhood. As an active group member, The SF Market collaborates to drive investment in critical infrastructure that supports local businesses, workers, and residents. The group has successfully championed initiatives such as road improvements, removing illegal dumping, the Bayview Shuttle, and implementing enhanced public safety measures.
POLICY ADVOCACY
The Market advocates for local economies, healthier communities, and more sustainable food systems. We engage with SF County and Statewide policy efforts such as the San Francisco Bay Area Local Food Purchasing Collaborative, Medically Supportive Food and Nutrition Services, and California Fruit and Vegetable EBT Program. These efforts underscore The Market’s systems-based approach to strengthening the connection between local producers and consumers, building a more interconnected and resilient regional food system with economic and public health benefits.

COVID-19 RESPONSE: VACCINATION SITE AND EMERGENCY FOOD PROGRAM
The Market played a key role in San Francisco’s economic and social recovery from the pandemic by serving as the high-volume vaccination site for Southeast San Francisco. Additionally, in response to heightened food insecurity during COVID-19, the San Francisco Department of Public Health and Crankstart supported The SF Market’s Emergency Food Program, enabling partnerships that supported merchants and community organizations. This initiative supplied over 3.5 million of pounds of fresh, nutritious, and culturally appropriate food to food-insecure residents between early 2020-2023.
A BAYVIEW HUNTERS POINT RESOURCE
The SF Market continues to evaluate our programs and how they impact our neighbors. If your Bayview Hunters Point business or nonprofit needs fresh produce or we can be a resource, please contact us, and we will do our best to help.
