ABOUT THE SF MARKET

Fresh, Healthy, Local and Delicious

Every night, while the City sleeps, restaurants, grocers, caterers, hotels and other food-related businesses get their finest fruit and vegetables from nearly two dozen independent merchants right here in San Francisco at The SF Market. Conventional and organic. Ordinary and specialty. We have it all, and have been the Bay Area’s premier source for exceptional produce for over 150 years!

As a critical outlet for California farmers, and a pillar of the Bay Area’s food economy for decades, many of our multi-generational merchants serve the same companies their parents and grandparents served. Our merchants currently support over 500 jobs at The Market, and thousands more at their customers establishments. Since 2013, The SF Market has been a nonprofit social enterprise. With over 485,000 sq. ft. of food-focused warehouse and logistics space in San Francisco’s Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood, our economic impact is significant. Our award-winning Food Recovery Program, has redirected over 9 million pounds of quality produce to food-insecure Bay Area residents – fresh food that otherwise would have headed to the landfill.

Our History

Our roots date back to the 1870s when San Francisco’s original produce market operated in a district now known as Sydney Walton Park. In 1963, the City relocated independent merchants and other businesses from this marketplace to a shared facility in Bayview Hunters Point, which has been The SF Market’s home ever since. The SF Market has grown with the City and the produce industry. Designated as an official “Legacy Business” by the City of San Francisco, The SF Market’s roots run deep. After moving to its current location in 1963, thanks to a 50-year land lease with the City, The SF Market expanded in the 2000s. Then in 2013 their lease was extended for another 60 years and it was also the year The SF Market became the only non-profit 501(c) (3) of its scale in the country. Over the last decade, the vision for The SF Market has continued to grow with reinvestment plans for the buildings and infrastructure, and continued support from area merchants and the City. Our merchants, who have been in operation for decades, sell and distribute various produce to retailers across the Bay Area, including restaurants, independent grocery stores, hotels, and other food businesses.

REINVESTMENT PLAN

In order to ensure that future generations of food businesses and non-profits in the San Francisco Bay Area are supplied with the highest quality and diversity of produce in Northern California, The SF Market committed to a long-term Reinvestment Plan to modernize and expand our facilities, supporting infrastructure, and nonprofit programming.  Our initial expansion began in 2000, with the addition of a new warehouse facility that provided 55,000 square feet of additional space at 2101 Jerrold Avenue. This space is now occupied by a large-scale merchant, Earl’s Organics. The Plan was formalized in 2013 when the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and Mayor Ed Lee renewed the city’s commitment to The SF Market with a new 60-year term lease and approved plans to build new facilities, make significant capital improvements to existing buildings and transition our legal classification to a non-profit.

By 2015, The SF Market added a LEED Gold certified 82,000 square foot warehouse at 901 Rankin Street which is occupied by Mollie Stone’s Markets, Arcadio’s Produce and Pay-Less Logistics. We are now working closely with the City of San Francisco on the next phases of the Reinvestment Plan, which are focused on developing the roads, buildings and systems needed to grow The SF Market’s services for the 21st century. These improvements will secure the Market’s marshalling yard, improve or replace original warehouses, expand facilities, upgrade adjacent roads and dedicate space for community programs.  Secured by this long-term lease and a strong partnership with the City of San Francisco, The SF Market is currently seeking mission-aligned philanthropic, government, and private financing to support the Reinvestment Plan and the expanding programs.
